Hebei’s 400,000-ton-class ore terminal will be capable of simultaneously berthing two vessels.
Recently, at the site of the third phase expansion project of the ore terminal in Caofeidian Port Area, Tangshan Port, Hebei Province, pile drivers are roaring, construction ships are shuttling back and forth, and builders are intensifying the pier renovation work. The expansion project of the ore terminal, the only one in Hebei capable of docking 400,000-ton ships, has entered the full construction stage.
"Coordinating project construction and production operations, we are carrying out a 'micro-transformation' of the terminal." An Jingwei, Deputy Director of the Technical Support Department of Caofeidian Port Ore Terminal Co., Ltd., stated that due to berth length limitations, the original terminal could only accommodate one 400,000-ton giant ship at a time. This transformation extends the terminal's shoreline by 120 meters to the east and involves the renovation and expansion of auxiliary support systems, bringing the total berth length to 910 meters, achieving "dual ship docking," and increasing the designed annual throughput capacity to 37 million tons.
Caofeidian Port Area, as an important receiving port for foreign trade imported iron ore, is densely packed with steel enterprises in its hinterland. After the project is put into use, it will further enhance port operation efficiency and truly benefit the real economy. "Currently, the terminal has achieved the regular full-load berthing of 400,000-ton giant ships, and the 'dual-wheel simultaneous berthing' mode can form a '40+N' berthing combination," Dong Jinzhong, Deputy General Manager of Caofeidian Port Ore Terminal Co., Ltd., told reporters.
"To build a world-class comprehensive trade port, Tangshan Port needs more of such precise and efficient 'micro-transformations'." said Luo Tongzhen, Deputy Director of Tangshan Marine Port and Shipping Administration Bureau. The total investment for this expansion project is about 300 million yuan, achieving "small investment, big results." Behind the port, the Caofeidian ore storage and logistics project is accelerating, and once completed, the static ore storage capacity will reach 3 million tons.
Tangshan Port is an important hub for the transshipment of bulk materials such as energy and raw materials in northern China, with a cargo throughput of 884 million tons last year. Currently, Tangshan City is accelerating the construction of 12 port projects to comprehensively enhance the port's integrated service capabilities, making strides in development and strengthening towards the sea.
