The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization Dominguez issued a statement in London on April 22, severely condemning the recent attack and seizure of merchant ships near the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such incidents are completely unacceptable, and calling on all parties to immediately release All detained ships and innocent seafarers. Dominguez pointed out that the situation in the Middle East is still extremely volatile, and he is puzzled that shipping companies take risks to let seafarers sail. He reiterated that a de-escalation of the situation, meaningful action and the restoration of freedom of navigation were the only way to resolve the crisis. One seafarer who had been besieged described the constant pressure of missiles flying overhead, ships being hit by debris, rationing of supplies and difficulties in maintaining contact with his family. Although the seafarer was eventually able to leave, nearly 20,000 seafarers were still trapped in the area for seven weeks and their return date is unknown. Since the United States imposed a blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports on April 13, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have been escalating. The U.S. military fired on an Iranian cargo ship trying to break through the blockade and took control of the ship. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard subsequently seized two ships that passed through the Strait without authorization. According to the International Maritime Organization, since the United States launched a large-scale military operation against Iran at the end of February, at least 26 ship attacks have been confirmed in the relevant waters, resulting in the death of 10 seafarers. Ships are advised to maintain the highest level of alert and not to risk sailing without security.
