Construction has begun on the national major scientific infrastructure project “Offshore Floating Island.”
On March 28, the national major scientific infrastructure project undertaken by Shanghai Jiao Tong University—the all-weather deep-sea floating research facility—was fully launched in Shanghai. This world-first ultra-large offshore research platform can simultaneously meet the research needs in the fields of marine equipment, marine resources, and marine science, and is also known as the "offshore floating island."
The "offshore floating island" large scientific device includes three major systems: the facility platform main body, shipborne laboratory, and shore-based support.
The facility platform main body system innovatively adopts a "semi-submersible twin-hull" ship design, with the capability for real-sea testing of large deep-sea equipment weighing hundreds of tons, and can conduct research and experimental exploration at full ocean depth of ten thousand meters.
The "offshore floating island" large scientific device is expected to be completed by 2030. Its unique design allows it to simultaneously meet the country's research needs in the fields of marine equipment, marine resources, and marine science, providing a real-sea testing platform for deep-sea mining systems, key supporting equipment for ships and marine vessels, and marine oil and gas equipment; accelerating the commercial exploitation and utilization of marine resources; revealing the seasonal evolution patterns of marine ecosystems, exploring the mysteries of the origin and evolution of life; and is expected to further improve typhoon forecast accuracy and enhance disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities.
